From 1988 to 1997 I worked for several architectural firms including Koen van Velsen and Ben van Berkel / UN Studio. After winning the Prix de Rome Architecture in 1995 former Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands Wytze Patijn invited me to work as coordinating architect of the Rijksgebouwendienst (Government Buildings Department). Within the RGD I have worked on a lot of projects, ranging from those in the definition phase through implementation projects, from interiors to urban design and from simple to complex.
After many years of service I had enough experience to start my own firm, which was established in September 2006. Continuity in projects and work methods has been guaranteed because five talented employees, with whom I worked for years at the RGD, decided to accept my request to go along. Having my own office gave me the chance to match the organization with my own design ideas and workmethods.
My graduation project in 1993 was nominated by the Academy of Architecture for the Archiprix 1993 (24 best graduation projects of all architecture schools in the Netherlands). In 1995, I finished first in the Prix de Rome Architecture (Prix de Rome is the largest state prize for art in the Netherlands and architecture held every 5 years). In 1996 my entry made the shortlist (last three) for the Europan 4, location Amsterdam Osdorp. In collaboration with Paul de Ruiter I won the open competition Bigfoot, a football stadium in L.A., in 1997.
Since 1995 I’m assisting students in design and graduation projects at the Academies of Architecture in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Arnhem, Tilburg and Groningen and Delft. On a regular basis I give lectures, including at the university. From 2003 to 2006 I was a member of the aesthetics committee at the invitation of Amsterdam and supervisor of the Western Harbour area. Since 2007 I’m a member of the architecture committee of the Foundation for Visual Arts Design and Architecture. In 2001, I judged at the Prix de Rome, in 2007 I was juror for the BNA Kubus and in 2011 for Archiprix.
